Window Shopping

{December 25, 2007}   Fun Fun Fun!

I saw this and while it’s fairly simple, I found it effective.  While I don’t particularily care for the blouse on the right (too much volume in the forearms…weird looking) I like the outfits in general but what I mainly like about this window is placement.  There are only two mannequins, and the window is almost entirely black EXCEPT for the mirrorball design behind them.  I think it makes a great ‘holiday’ window because it’s fun and eye catching without having to scream ‘LOOK CHRISTMAS’ or ‘NEW YEARS NOW!!!’

{December 15, 2007}   Almost Totally Awesome

This is a great window, let me say that.  This isn’t even a high end shop but its display looks very classy and upscale. The clothes are all cute, none of them are anything that will look odd or figureless on normal people.  The dress to the far left has a waist (unlike so many items I see on display these days), and the mannequin is wearing solid black tights, NOT leggings.  The mannequin in the center is wearing a rather boxy jacket, but it’s hemmed high, exposing *gasp* a waistline.  I love the metal bubbles in the middle as well.  They’re fun and it’s an eye catching way of displaying the accessories closer to eye level.  I don’t particularily care for the mustard colour but it works and makes the window pop.  The only thing I would say that is off is the ‘Reduced’ sign (in German) posted on the window in day glo orange.  It kind of takes away from the overall atmosphere of the clothes and display in this particular window.  It looks more like something you’d see in a cheap import shop, not a mid-range store on a classy street.  A nicely placed sign would have served better.

Since when did it become fashionable for women to dress like they are pregnant?  And since when did stores start telling women that this was a good idea?  I think a cute shift dress can look cute, but these are all quite wide.  I walked by this display the other day and thought ‘wow, each piece is equally shapeless!’   I think they’d all look very lovely on a pregnant woman, but this was not a maternity shop.  Basically, they are recommending we buy these and all look like we are wearing tents.  However, I can’t really blame the shop.   Like the horrifying leggings trend, women themselves are to blame for the ’shapeless dress/shirt/coat’ trend.  Basically a lot of women are afraid of showing off their figure, so they wear something along the lines of these, thinking that hiding it is more flattering.

Ladies, let me clarify something for you:  It is NOT flattering.  If you do not like your weight, this is only making you look larger, trust me.  You have a WAIST, and if you have one of those body types where you don’t really have a strong waistline, you should be trying to create the illusion of one.  I’m all for personal style, but this is universal.  You WILL look slimmer and more feminine, believe me.

{December 8, 2007}   Classic yet Modern

I quite like these pieces.  The dress on the left is remenicient of a belted shift from the swingin 60’s but the sleeves and neckline give it a modern flair.  I love the colour as well.  It’s actually quite a flattering colour on a lot of people and I like to see jewel tones as they are a nice break from black and grey.  The mannequin in the right is not wearing a shirt, as to show off the scarf.  it’s bold but makes a statement and I enjoy tasteful ’statement’ accessories.  Nice print, lovely colours.  Once again, taking something classic and adding a modern flavour to it.
